It Starts with Self-Love

Updated: Feb 15, 2023

Healthy relationships are key to health, and Valentine's Day is the perfect time to reflect on the relationships in your life. Whether it's a romantic partner, friends, or family, having strong, supportive relationships can have a positive impact on your mental, emotional, and physical well-being. In our busy lives, it's easy to forget what's most important. When elderly people are asked to reflect on their lives, they don't talk about wishing they worked harder or made more money. Instead, they almost always talk about wishing they had spent more meaningful time with those they love. To love others, you must first love yourself. Practicing self-care is an essential part of building self-love (read my recent post all about self-care here). And remember, self-care goes beyond the occasional massage or mani-pedi; it's about nurturing and refueling yourself at a deep level. This can include allocating time for yourself, setting healthy personal boundaries, and changing negative self-talk. Some examples of self-care activities include getting quality sleep, eating a healthy diet, getting regular exercise, and giving yourself time to recharge, whether it’s with massages, baths, yoga, or gratitude practices. With self-love in your toolbox, you can begin to build healthy relationships with others. A healthy relationship requires mutual trust, respect, caring, and acceptance. It's important to prioritize friendship, love, touch, intimacy, and sex in a relationship, while also setting healthy boundaries and being supportive of one another. Communication is another critical element of healthy relationships. Be open and honest with your partner or loved ones, and practice active listening to understand their needs and feelings. Remember that relationships require effort and commitment, but the rewards are worth it. Remember, the most important things in life are our health and our relationships. On this Valentine's Day, take some time to reflect on the relationships in your life, including your relationship with yourself. Prioritize loving yourself and those around you and watch as your overall well-being and happiness flourish. "Remove 'shoulds' from your vocabulary this year. Start your journey of self-love now.”
